Between kids, hair products, and pets shedding all over the house, hair of all types is bound to get into your bathroom sink. Fortunately, there are ways to remove the clog yourself, using household items that you probably already have in your broom closet! For minor hair blockages, here are a few tips for unclogging the sink yourself without breaking the bank.
- Use Baking Soda and Vinegar
This natural course of action is both economical and convenient.
- First, pour boiling water down the clogged drain.
- After waiting 60 seconds, pour a mixture of 1 cup vinegar and ¼ cup baking soda down the drain.
- Listen for a reaction… that means it’s working!
- After 20 minutes, pour more boiling water down the drain.
- Voila! The hair has deteriorated and your bathroom sink is clear once again.
- Snake It
If the hair causing the clog isn’t too far down within the plumbing, you may be able to simply pull it out yourself. Gross, but simple! You’ll need a plumber’s snake or drain stick to do so, but odds are, you probably don’t have one lying around your house. Instead, grab a wire coat hanger and straighten it out, bending it slightly at the end to make a hook. Carefully insert your homemade wire snake down the drain until you’ve felt you reached the blockage, and slowly pull it out.
- Plunge or Vacuum
Again, this technique will work well if the obstruction isn’t far down the pipe. Using a narrow attachment on your vacuum’s house, try vacuuming the hair out of the drain. You can try the same concept using your regular bathroom plunger.
