Whether you’re heading south for Spring break, driving across the state for the holidays or traveling far this summer, it pays to take a few preventative steps to ensure your plumbing is in good working condition when you get home. The experts at Air Tech, LBI’s local plumbing services company, have gathered a list of simple pre-vacation plumbing tips for New Jersey homeowners.
Plumbing Vacation Checklist
Before you leave town, check the following to ensure your home is in “vacation-mode.”
- Clean garbage disposal, drains and traps. Any leftover moisture in your drains or traps will lead to unpleasant odors.
- Turn off the main water valve to avoid potential accidents. Once the water valve is turned off, turn on the faucets to drain standing water (especially important in the winter months). Once the water has drained, turn the faucets back off.
- Ensure that the washing machine and dishwasher are empty. Leave the doors open to air out and prevent mold and mildew, if possible.
- Check the gutters and remove debris, leaves and any sticks clogging the inlet.
- Test that your sump pump is working properly. If it doesn’t eject water correctly, schedule professional plumbing services to check before you leave.
- Adjust your water heater to keep energy bills low. Set it to the lowest setting possible or even shut it off completely to prevent the chances of flooding.
- Find someone to check on your home while you’re away. This will give you the peace of mind that your home is in safe hands. Find out more about our concierge program and local plumbing services for LBI residents.
